METHOD FOR OPERATING VERTICAL FURNACE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a vertical furnace, which can stabilize an operation of the vertical furnace by separating coke to be charged into the vertical furnace according to its strength while using a simple technique, and using the coke having high strength as coke to be charged into the center. SOLUTION: When fractionating the coke for metallurgy into two or more types according to apparent specific gravities, and charging each coke for metallurgy, which has been obtained by the fractionation, into the vertical furnace from the furnace top part, the method for operating the vertical furnace includes charging the each coke into different positions in a radial direction. Alternatively, the method includes: fractionating a part of the coke for metallurgy to be used in the vertical furnace into coke having a large apparent specific gravity and coke having a small apparent specific gravity; using the coke having the large apparent specific gravity as coke to be charged into the center in the vertical furnace; and using the coke having the small apparent specific gravity by preparing a mixture of the coke and another coke which has not been fractionated according to the specific gravity and charging the mixture into the vertical furnace.
