Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive Raman amplifier with less consumption of power and a control method thereof, wherein a plurality of pumping sources are appropriately driven according to the system requirements so that stable behavior is possible, and constant control of Raman gain is achieved with high accuracy. SOLUTION: The Raman amplifier, when start up or the like, drives a predetermined number of pumping sources among a plurality of pumping sources, in a stable region, and determines a Raman gain in the transmission line, and based on the determination result, specifies a pumping source to switch on and a pumping source to switch off, among the plurality of pumping sources, and controls the drive state of the pumping sources that are switched on.
