SOLUTION: The terphenylene derivative represented by formula (1) is produced by lithiating a tetrahaloterphenyl derivative in a dialkylether using a lithiating agent and subsequently causing the resulting product to react with a copper compound. In the formula, substituents R1to R8may be the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, a 1-30C alkyl group, a 4-30C aryl group, a 2-30C alkynyl group or a 2-30C alkenyl group, and m is 0 or 1.
