Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition satisfying at least one characteristic or having appropriate balance between at least two of the characteristics, such as a high upper limit temperature of a nematic phase, a low lower limit temperature of a nematic phase, low viscosity, an appropriate optical anisotropy, a negative large dielectric constant anisotropy, large specific resistivity, high stability to ultraviolet rays, high stability to heat; and furthermore, to provide an AM element having characteristics, such as a short response time, a high voltage holding ratio, a high contrast ratio and a long life. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains a compound having tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl with large negative dielectric constant anisotropy as a first component, 4-propyl-4'-vinylbi(cyclohexane) as a second component, a particular compound having a high upper limit temperature as a third component, and a particular compound having a negative large dielectric constant anisotropy as a forth component, and has negative dielectric anisotropy; and the liquid crystal display element contains this composition.
