Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modified novolac resin having excellent flowability, moisture resistance and heat resistance; and to provide a thermosetting resin composition blended with the modified novolac resin as a curing agent. SOLUTION: The cross-linked modified novolac resin is provided which contains: a 5 to 70 mol% recurring unit originated from a compound expressed by formula (I); a 0 to 70 mol% recurring unit originated from a compound expressed by formula (II); and a 30 to 50 mol% formaldehydes and ortho-hydroxybenzaldehydes expressed by formula (III). The modified novolac resin contains a recurring unit expressed by formula (IV) and a recurring unit expressed by formula (V).
