Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an infrared-ray communication apparatus which is small in a circuit scale, has high reliability, and reduces its electric power consumption when detecting an effective pulse width of an RZ signal. SOLUTION: The effective width detecting circuit, of an infrared communication apparatus which includes the effective width detecting circuit for detecting an effective width of each pulse contained in the received RZ signal, includes a rising edge detection unit 21 which detects a rising edge of each pulse, a counter 22 which counts a time from the rising edge detecting point of each pulse, the minimum value detection unit 23 which detects the existence of pulse when a time count value comes to the minimum width detection time n, the maximum value detection time 24 which detects the existence of pulse when a time count value comes to the maximum width detection time m, and an effective pulse decision unit 25-30 which determines this pulse to be effective when the minimum value detection unit 23 detects a pulse and the maximum value detection unit 24 does not detect a pulse.
