SOLUTION: A fuel cell 10 includes: an electrolyte membrane 16; an anode provided on one face of the electrolyte membrane 16; a cathode provided on the other face of the electrolyte membrane 16; the anode chamber 70, located adjacent to the anode, which stores fuel gas supplied directly to the anode; a water absorbing member 27, placed in the anode chamber 70, which absorbs water, transmits the water and does not transmit the fuel gas; and a communicating channel 38 which communicates the anode chamber 70 to the exterior via the water absorbing member 27.
