Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure operating performance of a hydraulic shock absorber by preventing a protector covering the outer periphery of a rod element projecting from a cylinder body from interfering with other portions. SOLUTION: The hydraulic shock absorber has a shock absorber main body SA in which the rod element 2 is inserted to freely move in and out with respect to the cylinder body 1, a suspension spring S wound around the shock absorber main body SA and biasing the shock absorber main body SA in an extension direction, a tank body T formed integrally with the shock absorber main body SA and serving as a reservoir and the protector 3 covering from outside of the suspension spring S the outer periphery of the rod element 2 projecting outward from the cylinder body 1, wherein the protector 3 has a cutout portion 3b for partially exposing the outer periphery of the rod element 2 and the cutout portion 3b is opposed to the tank body T.
