PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for controlling an internal combustion engine improving the quality of engine control in a dynamic operation state and/or in the case that engine characteristics are displaced from one another. SOLUTION: The method for controlling the internal combustion engine 7 includes a preparation step of preparing a target value VMsof at least one combustion Merkmal VM of the combustion of the internal combustion engine 7 based on a target characteristic map 3 according to operation point, a determination step determining an adjustment value SGvbased on the characteristic map for the control of the internal combustion engine 7 from an adjustment value characteristic map 4, a settlement step of settling an adjustment value SGmodcorrected for the control of the internal combustion engine 7 by a model 15 based on data, and a preparation step of preparing an actual adjustment value SG(k) of the internal combustion engine 7 for controlling the internal combustion engine 7.
