PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character conversion system for a portable information terminal that can display optimum conversion candidates considering a target reader during text creation. SOLUTION: The character conversion system for a portable information terminal comprises a character predictive conversion process part 102 for, when a character string is input from a character input device 101, generating conversion candidates using a word dictionary part 103 by a predictive conversion method, a relationship acquisition process part 105 for acquiring a relationship of the person who has entered the characters to a recipient according to a mail address input at email creation, a relationship-considered display order decision process part 104 for deciding the order of display of the predictive conversion candidates in consideration of the acquired relationship to the recipient to create a conversion candidate list, a character string output process part 107 for outputting the conversion candidate list to a display device 108, and a relationship information update process part 110 for, when any converted characters are selected, updating the relationship of the selected converted characters and effecting learning by the predictive conversion method in consideration of use frequency or the like.
