SOLUTION: The method is to react an olefin with carbon monoxide and a nucleophilic compound in the presence of a catalyst system based on (a) a source of a group VIII metal cation, (b) a source of an aliphatic diphosphine, and (c) a carboxylic acid, i.e., a hydrocarboxylation product of the olefin, by continuously or intermittently adding the carboxylic acid during the process or continuously or intermittently adding water and producing in-situ.
