Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal carrier useful as a decomposition catalyst or the like of carbon dioxide by directly erecting magnetite whiskers useful as a carbon dioxide decomposition catalyst on the surface of the inner walls of a large number of through-holes. SOLUTION: The metal carrier has a carrier body formed of a ferrous material and having a large number of through-holes and a large number of magnetite whiskers directly erected at least on the inner walls of the through-holes of the carrier body. In the manufacturing method of the metal carrier, the carrier body having a large number of the through-holes having a honeycomb shape or the like is brought into contact with a gaseous atmosphere containing an oxygen atom at the oxidation temperature of the ferrous material or above to keep the magnetite whiskers directly erected at least on the surface layers of the inner walls of the through-holes of the carrier body from oxygen supplied from gas and iron supplied from the carrier body. Alternatively, after whiskers of iron oxide such as magnetite or the like are erected, the iron oxide whiskers are modified to magnetite, cation depleted magnetite or cation excessive magnetite by oxidation or reduction treatment.
