Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To intensify an intake air inertia effect and improve volumetric efficiency by developing negative pressure in a cylinder at a time of intake valve opening. SOLUTION: An ECU determines whether an engine operation condition is in a low-speed heavy-load zone or not in S101, and is progressed to S112 if it is determined that the condition is in the low speed heavy-load zone. Negative overlap (-O/L) in which both an exhaust valve and an intake valve open during the descending of a piston after the close of the exhaust valve is provided by bringing the intake valve into a small operation angle low-lift retarded timing state as compared with a state during normal operation with a state of using a variable valve gear (VEL-VTC device) provided on the intake valve in S112. Exhaust valve close timing is set near a top dead center beforehand. The ECU is progressed to S113 after providing -O/L, and carries out fuel divided injection control comprising main injection carried out during intake valve opening after the completion of -O/L and pilot injection carried out during -O/L.
