PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a sewing machine for achieving a method for adjusting preload force of a presser foot of the sewing machine with higher reliability and comfortableness. SOLUTION: The sewing machine includes a housing, a support plate, and the presser foot to cooperate with the support plate for clamping fabric. A power source is supported by the housing on one side, and at the presser foot on the other side, thus preloading the presser foot against the support plate. An adjustment device serves for adjusting the preload force exerted on the presser foot by the power source. The adjustment device has an adjustment body which is mounted in the housing so as to be pivotable about the pivotal axis. The adjustment body includes a surface wall via which the adjustment body abuts against the power source for influencing the preload force. The radius of the surface wall changes continuously and strictly monotonically within an adjustment angle range about the pivot axis. This results in a sewing machine which ensures a more reliable and comfortable adjustment of the preload force for the presser foot. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
