SOLUTION: In the method for operating the printing unit (27) of the printer (26), the printing unit 27 is operated, for example, in a first operation mode of a printing operation, and is operated, for example, in a second operation mode of a maintenance operation. In the first operation mode, printing unit cylinders 28, 30 and an ink kneading roller 31 are rotatably driven by a first motor 21, and the ink kneading roller 31 is driven in an axial direction by a second motor 22.
