Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix substrate having an ESD protective circuit connected to at least one row conductor so as to protect a TFT from electrostatic discharge (ESD). SOLUTION: The ESD protective circuit 20 has either a lateral diode 21 or a lateral, gate shorted TFT 13 connected between row and column conductors 15 and 19 and preferably at least one opposing pair of the diodes or TFTs connected in parallel between row and column conductors 14. In particular, the semiconductor region includes two portions located at both ends of the active region of the diode or TFT, a first portion at one end of the active region is connected to the row conductor 15 and a second portion on the other end of the active region is at least twice and preferably ten times as large as the size of the first portion.
