Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner capable of surely exhausting air in a pressure chamber, even if a solid particle is mixed in a hydraulic fluid supplied into the pressure chamber. SOLUTION: In the chain tensioner 1, the pressure chamber 11 is formed in a cylinder 9 by slidably inserting a plunger 10 in the axial direction into a bottomed cylindrical cylinder 9 having opening one end; an oil feeding passage 13 is formed in the cylinder 9 for making the inside communicate with the outside of the pressure chamber 11; a spiral screw clearance 25 is formed for making the inside communicate with the outside of the pressure chamber 11; the plunger 10 is energized in a direction projecting from the cylinder 9 by a return spring 21 incorporated into the pressure chamber 11; and a chain 6 is pressed by the plunger 10.
