SOLUTION: A patterned recording media include segments and null patterns formed in the segment. The segment includes first and second row of individual magnetic elements separated by a nonmagnetic material, and nonmagnetic material disposed between the first and the second row. The null pattern includes consecutive groups of individual magnetic elements within the first and the second row of the segment. Each group within the first row has an opposite magnetic polarity of its adjacent groups. Each group within the second row has an opposite magnetic polarity of its adjacent groups.
