SYSTEM FOR CONTROLLING PACKET TRAFFIC

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a traffic control system for giving a speed instruction to vehicles on a road to form a packet having predetermined vehicle train length and inter-vehicle train distance for reducing unnecessary acceleration/deceleration, improving fuel economy to reduce environmental pollution, and suppressing occurrence of a natural jam. SOLUTION: This traffic control system includes a vehicle sensor CS detecting a vehicle on the road, a traveling speed indicator VI indicating a traveling speed for a vehicle on the road, a vehicle train detection means 104 detecting a vehicle train ranging with a predetermined inter-vehicle distance, a packet formation control means 106 designating a traveling speed to form a packet having the predetermined vehicle train length and inter-vehicle train distance for vehicles on the road, a packet traveling control means 108 indicating a traveling speed so that the formed packets from respective directions can pass an intersection efficiently, and a signal control means 114 interlocked with a packet arriving at the intersection under control of the packet traveling control means to control a signal.
