Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance gas permeability in a gas diffusion layer coming in contact with a metallic separator. SOLUTION: A fuel cell 10 includes an electrolyte membrane-electrode assembly 12 and first and second metallic separators 14, 16. A step part 40 is formed in a gas diffusion layer 26a composing the electrolyte membrane-electrode assembly 12 by cutting out in the thickness direction, corresponding to a boundary portion between a projection part 30a and a recessed part 30b of the first metallic separator 14. The gas diffusion layer 26a has a thick part 42a and a thin part 42b through the step part 40, and the step part 40 comes in contact with fuel gas which flows through a fuel gas passage 30.
