Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyimide useful as an optical compensation film material for a liquid crystal display, which has all of high transparency, high reflectivity, low wavelength dispersion property of birefringence of visible light region wave length, high solubility in an organic solvent and sufficient membrane toughness, and to provide an optical compensation film using the polyimide. SOLUTION: A polyimide having a recurring unit containing a cyclobutane residue and a recurring unit containing no cyclobutane residue is provided. By the polyimide, a polyimide useful as an optical compensation film material for liquid crystal display and having all of high transparency, high reflectivity, low wavelength dispersion property of birefringence of visible light region wave length, high solubility in an organic solvent and sufficient membrane toughness, and the optical compensation film using the polyimide can be provided.
