Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of reducing the skew amount of read images with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: The image reader A reads an original image on platen glass 1c while having a carriage 6 loaded with a read means 5 travel along the lower surface of the platen glass 1c by a back and forth travel driving means 7. The carriage 6 is turned to a thin and long rectangular parallelepiped shape extending in a direction orthogonal to a traveling direction b by the back and forth travel driving means 7, inserted and supported slidably by a guide rod 8 along the traveling direction b at one end side part 6a in the longitudinal direction, supported slidably on a slidable guide member 9 along the traveling direction at the other end side part 6b, and is provided with a counter balance 10 on the part on the side opposite to the other end side part 6b from the support part by the guide rod 8.
