Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transmission type polarizing element which reduces return light, has excellent durability and can be used as a light absorbing polarizing plate, and to provide a combined polarizer capable of securing a large extinction ratio and using the transmission type polarizing element. SOLUTION: A structure in which a plurality of ridges having a projected cross-sectional shape are periodically arranged in parallel is formed on a dielectric substrate and at least two of films having different refractive indexes, respectively, are laminated on the surface of the structure to form a dielectric multilayer structure having a polarizing function. A transmission type polarizing element is characterized by including a wire grid type light absorption structure constituted so that a plurality of wire-like light absorbing bodies are arranged in parallel in the dielectric multilayer structure in the length direction of the ridges. The compound polarizing plate is characterized by arranging the transmission type polarizing element on the light incident side and by arranging a second transmission type polarizer, e.g. a wire grid type polarizer or a light absorptive directional organic film, which is different from the transmission type polarizing element, on the light emitting side.
