Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit capable of acquiring sufficient luminance even without using a prism sheet. SOLUTION: The backlight unit is provided with a diffusion light guide plate 4 having a light incidence surface 12 and a light emitting surface 14 opposed to the light incidence surface 12, a reflecting member 8 disposed oppositely to the light incidence surface 12 of the diffusion light guide plate 4, a primary light source 6 disposed between the diffusion light guide plate 4 and the reflecting member 8, a light diffusion sheet 10 disposed oppositely to the light emitting surface 14 of the diffusion light guide plate 4. This light emitting surface 14 has a plurality of protrusions 20 (or recesses) continuously disposed in a predetermined direction and a direction perpendicular to the predetermined direction. Each of the protrusions (or recesses) is formed into a quadrangular pyramid having a rectangular section.
