SOLUTION: A method of manufacturing the phenol-modified aromatic hydrocarbon formaldehyde resin comprises subjecting an aromatic hydrocarbon formaldehyde resin having a mean number of reacted protons in an aromatic ring of 1.8-3.0 and an acetal value of 0-2.2 mol/kg, and phenol or a phenol derivative, to a condensation reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst.
