Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a liquid crystal device having excellent display characteristics with high productivity. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the liquid crystal device including a first substrate having a pixel electrode 9 and a shielding film 13, a second substrate arranged to face it, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the substrates, defines a position corresponding to the pixel electrode 9 as a display region P, and defines a region between the display regions P as a non-display region BM. The pixel electrode 9 is formed at the display region P, its peripheral edge part 9b is formed at the non-display region BM, a vertical alignment layer is formed at the display region P on the pixel electrode 9, and a horizontal alignment layer 42 is formed on the peripheral edge part 9b of at least the pixel electrode 9 of the non-display region BM. Here, the horizontal alignment layer 42 forms an alignment layer material layer (photoresist) 42a on the side of the pixel electrode 9 of a precursor 10B, rubbing treatment is applied to it, the shielding film 13 is used a mask to be exposed and developed, and the horizontal alignment layer 42 is formed by patterning.
