PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a video camera capable of video recording and reproduction with a subminiature size equivalent to that of an 8 mm video cassette, and to realize a video camera system comprising the video camera and an external recorder to record and reproduce the video data for a long time. SOLUTION: Video data picked up by a video camera 20 are compressed by a compression/decompression circuit 5, the compressed video data are stored in a built-in semiconductor memory 6 or a disk memory 13 fixed in the video camera 20. The stored video data are transferred to an external recorder 23. Furthermore, the external recorder 23 stores the transferred video data to a data storage while being compressed. The video camera 20 receives the compressed video data read from the external recorder 23, decompresses the data and converts the data into a television signal in reproducing them. Thus, the video camera with video recording and reproduction function of a subminiature type able to record video data for a long time and the video camera system using the video camera are realized.
