Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a VA-mode liquid crystal display element which is improved in display uneveness characteristics. SOLUTION: The VA-mode liquid crystal display element is provided with; a vertical alignment-type liquid crystal cell 2 having a liquid crystal layer comprising liquid crystal of negative dielectric anisotropy, the liquid crystal layer being sandwiched by a pair of substrates whose surfaces are each subjected to vertical alignment processing; and a pair of viewer-side (F) polarizing plate 3 and antiviewer-side (R) polarizing plate 4 which sandwich the liquid crystal cell 2 and are arranged in a crossed Nicol configuration to each other. In this case, phase-difference plates 5 and 6 are each provided between the F polarizing plate 3 and the liquid crystal cell 2 and between the R polarizing plate 4 and the liquid crystal cell 2, respectively, the phase-difference plates having positive optical activity and generating phase differences of nearly 1/4 wavelength with their optical axes being one direction in the surface parallel to the substrate which constitutes the liquid crystal cell 2.
