Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device that has a wide dynamic range by allowing an increase and decrease in only a quantity of light without increasing or decreasing the number of fly eye cells or peripheral luminous fluxes. SOLUTION: In the projection type display device, light from a light source 10 is divided into luminous fluxes by a fly eye integrator including first and second fly eye lenses 13 and 14. Each of the luminous fluxes converges and enters a polarization conversion element 15. Light emitted after its polarizing direction is aligned is modulated by liquid crystal display elements OR, 20G and 20B so as to correspond to image signals, and the image light thus produced is enlarged and projected by a projection lens 30. A variable diaphragm mechanism 40 for varying a luminous flux width is disposed between the emission face of the second fly eye lens 14 and the polarization conversion element 15.
