Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for purifying exhaust gas, especially a catalyst for purifying exhaust gas containing a hydrocarbon absorbing material with the capability of reducing HC emissions. SOLUTION: This catalyst for purifying exhaust gas 1 comprises a base 2, a hydrocarbon absorbing layer 3 covering the base 2 and a catalytic layer 4 covering the hydrocarbon absorbing layer 3. In addition, the above catalytic layer 4 comprises a laminate of a first catalytic layer 4a containing a noble metal and a carrier carrying the noble metal and a second catalytic layer 4b containing a noble metal of the same kind as the above noble metal and a carrier carrying the former, with a higher density of the above noble metal than that of the first catalytic layer 4a.
