Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modified phenol resin that has a low molecular weight and small polydispersity (Mw/Mn), and contains added monomers introduced into the resin skeleton, further has narrowed molecular weight distribution by subjecting a phenol resin of middle or high molecular weight to splitting and rearranging reactions. SOLUTION: To 100 pts.wt. of phenol resin, 50 to 200 pts.wt. of phenol monomers and 0.1 to 10 pts.wt. of a catalyst are added. Then, the mixture is allowed to react with each other at 120 to 200°C under the atmospheric pressure for 1 to 6 hours. Thereby the unreacted phenols are removed and the resultant modified phenol resin not containing unreacted phenols has a narrowed molecular weight distribution with less than 1.8 polydispersity (Mw/Mn).
