Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element which is usable for an optical pickup, mounted with a liquid crystal optical element and provided to remove the wavefront aberrations of laser light, and suppresses generation of astigmatism due to temperature variations, even if the liquid crystal optical element has a liquid crystal layer whose planar shape is not square. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element, having the liquid crystal layer held between two transparent substrates with an interposed rectangular seal formed, such that long-side seals are thinner than short-side seals adopts constitution such that long-side seal widths decrease from two intersections of the long-side seals and short-side seals to the centers.
