PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image input system in which the attaching direction of a hot shoe is conformed with an electric connection direction and the mechanical connection and electric connection to an external device are performed by the same operation, and to provide an adapter used therefor, an image input device and an external device. SOLUTION: In the image input system having a camera 1, the adapter 3 attached to/detached from the shoe 4, and the external device 2 attached to the shoe 4 through the adapter 3, the adapter 3 has an attaching part capable of slidably attaching the external device 2 in an attaching direction different from the shoe 4, and the connection direction of the external device 2 to a communication connector arranged in the camera 1 is conformed with the direction that the adapter 3 is attached to the attaching part.
