Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform stable surface modification processing with respect to an engine valve inexpensively. SOLUTION: Stem parts 12 of engine valves 10 are alternately inserted and held in blocks 36 of a tool 30 to form first engine valve rows 40. Stem parts 12 of additional engine valves 10 are inserted between neighboring engine valves 10, and side peripheral wall faces of first tapered parts 18 thereof are abutted on upper end faces of disc parts 22 of the engine valves 10 of the first engine valve rows 40, and the abutment is repeated to form second engine valve rows 42. In glow discharge, energization is stopped when a predetermined time has passed after the start of the energization, and the energization is restarted after a predetermined time has passed from the stop of the energization.
