Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect a blank area (side mask) appearing outside a video area on a screen when an aspect ratio of a display screen is different from that of a video. SOLUTION: ORing operation is carried out on both detection results of: an active detection part 3a for detecting a side mask by detecting the boundary between the side mask and a video area based on a change in brightness level of a plurality of scanning lines of the video; and a level detection part 3b for detecting the side mask by setting two or more judging areas in the video beforehand, when there is no change in an average brightness level within a predetermined period in the judging areas preset in the side mask position and there are changes in the average brightness level in the judging areas preset in the video area.
