PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit occurrence of a fault such as difference of curtain speed between a preceding curtain and a following curtain or uneven exposure due to positional shift of the curtain surface (occurrence of vignetting) while reducing power consumption. SOLUTION: In the case of low speed shuttering where the shutter speed is set at a low speed by an exposure control means, exposure start operation is performed by an electronic focal plane shutter function by an image sensor (the electronic focal plane shutter is employed as a preceding curtain), and exposure end operation is performed by a mechanical focal plane shutter. On the other hand, in case of high speed shuttering where the shutter speed is set at a high speed by the exposure control means, both the exposure start operation and exposure end operation are performed by the mechanical focal plane shutter (the mechanical focal plane shutter is employed as the preceding curtain).
