PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector that can increase the contrast of a projected image by suppressing decrease in contrast, by using a stop suitable to the characteristics of the optical system comprising lenses, an optical modulating element, etc. SOLUTION: An image forming system stop 50 is arranged in the optical path from a DMD 15 to a projection lens 17. An opening formed in the image formation system stop 50 is made eccentric with respect to the optical axis of the projection lens 17. The direction of eccentricity of the opening is determined, according to the illuminance distribution at the position of an entrance pupil of the projection lens 17, the position of a light source image relative to the entrance pupil, or the direction of incidence of light on the DMD 15 etc. The quantity of eccentricity of the opening is calculated from the diameter of the entrance pupil of the projection lens 17, the F number of an optical system guiding light from the light source 1 to the projection lens 17, and the angle of the light source image with respect to the entrance pupil.
