Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical composition for a multicolor display which exhibits white color with a high degree of whiteness, an optical element 10, and a display method of the optical element 10. SOLUTION: The optical element is equipped with a dispersion medium 20, a periodic structure 18, having a void structure that communicates with the outside in the inside thereof, and mobile particles 20A contained in the dispersion medium 20, having 1 nm≤ and ≤80 nm volume mean primary diameter size in a dispersed state, having 100 nm≤ volume mean primary diameter size of coagulated particles thereof, in an optically coagulated state induced by stimulus, and further having a refractive index with a value different from that of the dispersion medium by 0.1 or larger, wherein the mobile particles 20A are colorless in a dispersed state in the dispersion medium 20, and assume white color with whiteness equal to, or higher than the prescribed value in the coagulated state.
