Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a deposition friction stir welding process that compensates for the production of flash and general thinning of material along the joint line as well as a relatively smooth transition from the non-weld regions to the welded region. SOLUTION: This welding process includes placing a filler material (34) on and about a joint line (16) formed by butting a first workpiece surface (18) against a second workpiece surface (20); and frictionally heating the filler material (34) to soften the filler material (34) and portions of the first and second workpiece surfaces (18, 20) in thermal contact with the filler material (34) and form a weld between the first and second workpieces (18, 20), wherein frictionally heating is at a temperature below a melting point of the filler material (34) and the first and second workpiece surfaces (18, 20).
