Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve reading by eliminating a difference between the picture quality of each face in the case of double-sided simultaneous reading, and to perform mode selection suitable for the request of a user by making executable double-sided reading in a plurality of modes. SOLUTION: A CIS(contact type image sensor) 135 for a back face and a CIS137 for a front face are installed on the conveyance path of an ADF 15 so that it is possible to read both sides by using one path, and to eliminate any difference between the picture quality of both sides generated in a conventional system (reading the back face by CIS and reading the front face by a CCD 111 by using a reduced optical system by a reading window 181). Also, an original inverting mechanism(inverting switching safety lug and inverting roller) is installed on the ADF so that it is possible to achieve double-sided reading by the two systems of CIS reading and sheet-through ADF reading using the reduced optical system. Thus, it is possible to perform mode setting to select which the CIS reading(reading with low resolution and low gradation by one path and high speed reading processing) and sheet-through ADF reading(reading with high picture quality using the reduced optical system and low speed two-path reading) should be set as an execution operation mode, and to comply with the request of a user.
