Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum treatment apparatus and its sealing methodby which the service life of a sealing member can be extended by suppressing the wearing and the deterioration of quality of the sealing member caused by radiant heat from an upper cover and the heat of molten steel, and the degree of vacuum in the inner part of the vacuum treatment vessel at the refining time of the molten steel can be stabilized over a long period of time. SOLUTION: In the vacuum treatment apparatus 10 comprises: the vacuum treatment vessel 12 in which a refining ladle 11 storing the molten steel is arranged; and the upper cover 14 placed on the vessel through the sealing member 13. In the upper end part of the vacuum treatment vessel 12, a flange part 15 in which the sealing member 13 is arranged in its bottom part and is formed in a recessed shape in the cross section, is provided. In the outside of the vacuum treatment vessel 12, a water supply means 16 for supplying water into the flange part 15 is provided. In the sealing method, when the upper cover 14 is placed on the vacuum treatment vessel 12, the water is supplied in the flange part 15 to make the liquid surface level of the water in the flange part 15 higher than the upper end level of the sealing member 13.
