Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to suppress formation of a magnetic wall without using special equipment by controlling roughness of a surface on which a soft magnetic underlayer is to be formed in a proper range in a disk substrate for a perpendicular magnetic recording medium wherein the soft magnetic underlayer is formed on a non-magnetic substrate. SOLUTION: The surface roughness Ra of the non-magnetic substrate 1 is specified to be 1.5 to 20 nm and the soft magnetic underlayer 2 is formed on the non-magnetic substrate 1 having the surface roughness so that a soft magnetic film having 0.4 to 1.5 T saturation magnetic flux density is formed in 0.15 to 10 μm film thickness.
