Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for reproducing a localized portion at desired resolution at fast speed. SOLUTION: In a decoding method, a bitstream representing an image is decoded and a part of the image is reproduced. The bitstream consists of a plurality of frequency subbands generated by wavelet transforming an image. Each subband is divided into a plurality of tiles. Each tile is entropy encoded. The entropy encoded tile for representing the same portion of the image is continuously disposed in the bitstream for at least one wavelet transform level. In the method, resolution and a part of the image are selected, and a part of the image is reproduced by decoding an entropy encoded tile in the bitstream corresponding to the selected resolution and a part of the image.
