Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus, which bring about the efficient high-density compaction of a viscous material to be compacted, particularly, such as bentonite. SOLUTION: In the impact type compaction method, the material to be compacted is compacted by randomly reciprocating each of a plurality of compaction rods where a compacting surface with an area large enough to prevent the destruction of the material to be compacted is formed at its leading end, depending on a driving force of a driving source of a reciprocating mechanism; an edge, at a leading end in the traveling direction of a moving machine body, of the compacting surface is retreated along the returning route of a reciprocating motion at least until it is flush with a surface of the material-to-be-compacted before the compaction; and the reciprocating motion is repeated while the plurality of compaction rods are simultaneously moved in the traveling direction of the machine body, so that compacting operations can be continuously performed by using an impact force.
