Zusammenfassung:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rear projection display optical system limiting the light emitting angle of a projector capable of realizing a high-resolution and high-efficiency thinned rear projection display. SOLUTION: In the rear projection display optical system successively reflecting light from a picture display element 1 by a plurality of aspherical reflection plates 21to 2nand guiding it to a screen 3, a difference ¾θmax-θmin¾ between a maximum angle θmaxand a minimum angle θminin the emitting direction of light from the picture display element on a cross section longitudinally cutting the optical path of the optical system is within a range equal to or under an angle α decided from geometrical optics and equal to or above an angle β decided from wave optics, and the locus of the intersection of two light beams emitted from one point moving on all the surface of the picture display element at two angles θmaxand θminand reflected on the aspherical reflection plate 2nof a final stage forms an almost plane, and a screen surface is positioned within the range of the recessed and projecting parts of the almost plane.
