PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fundamentally unnecessitate initial adjustment, regarding a remaining toner quantity detection system. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with the remaining toner quantity detection system for calculating the relative variation of the electrostatic capacity of the remaining toner quantity with reference to the prescribed number of recording sheets R in detecting the remaining toner quantity, and displaying the effect that the remaining toner quantity is excessively small when the relative variation of the electrostatic capacity of the remaining toner quantity is judged to be exceeding the reference variation, consequently, the remaining toner quantity is detected, and also, the display showing that the remaining toner quantity is excessively small is given, on the basis of the relative change in a single detection signal about the remaining toner quantity, and the conventional manner of comparing two detection signals about the remaining toner quantity is eliminated, and a process of adjusting the detection output is unnecessitated.
