Zusammenfassung:	PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water purification system for supplying purified water, improving a Langelier index, and reducing the manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: The water purification system comprises a filter basin filled with a filter material and having an inlet for water to be treated and an outlet for treated water, and a backwash device for backwashing the filter material filling the water basin. The filter material includes along with filtering sand powdered seashells which form a multilayer structure and consists mainly of calcium carbonate, wherein the ratio of the average diameter of the powdered seashells a to that of the filter sand b is 1.0-8.0 of a/b.
