NAVIGATION APPARATUS AND MAP UPDATING SYSTEM THEREFOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation apparatus in which unauthorized installation is surely prevented even though a plurality of kinds of updating map data exist and reinstallation of the updating map data by an authorized user can be made and to provide a map updating system for the navigation apparatus. SOLUTION: The updating map data and a map identification code which is different in the kind of data and version, are recorded in a DVD-ROM3. An authentication device 6 into which the map identification code is recorded and the DVD-ROM3 are sold in combination. When the above two are set into a car navigation apparatus 1, a control section 15 collates the map identification codes read from both and when both are matched and an authentication code has not been registered in a flash memory 18, the control section 15 generates an authentication code based on time data and writes the generated authentication code into the memory 18 in pairs with the map identification code and also writes the authentication code to the authentication device 6 with the condition that writing can be made. When registration is already made, the control section 15 writes the authentication code to the authentication device 6 with the condition that the authentication code which is registered in pairs with the map identification code can be written. Then, the authentication code is read from the authentication device 6 and when the read authentication code is matched with the registered code that has been registered in the memory 18 in pairs with the map identification code of this time, the authentication device 6 is made into writing inhibit and installation is made into a hard disk 10 from the DVD-ROM3.
