SOLUTION: In processing a picked up image which has picked up the image in front of an own vehicle to detect vehicle road signs drawn continuously in a traveling direction on the road by each character or each sign, an image processing area on a picked up image is narrowed down on the basis of a detection result every time the character or sign of the road signs is detected and the road signs are identified on the basis of the continuously detected characters or signs.
