Zusammenfassung: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an OCB mode liquid crystal display which can rapidly shift the orientation state of liquid crystal molecules from an initial orientation state into an orientation state for screen display while reducing power consumption, and to provide a method for driving the display. SOLUTION: One or more pairs of upper and lower pretilt electrodes 270, 280 are formed to partially cover upper and lower driving electrodes 240, 250, and a pretilt voltage equal to or higher than a transition voltage is applied between the upper and lower pretilt electrodes 270, 280 to shift the liquid crystal molecules into a first orientation state, that is, to shift a portion of the liquid crystal molecules into a bend or vertical orientation state. Therefore, although a low driving voltage is applied between the upper and lower driving electrodes 240, 250, the liquid crystal molecules can be rapidly shifted into a second orientation state for screen display. Consequently, a high response speed can be achieved, so that it is possible to display a high-speed moving picture and to reduce power consumption because it can operate with low power.
